SUMMARY:350NM Speaker Series – Managing Our Water in a Drying Climate
DESCRIPTION:The Water Task Force was appointed by State Engineer Mike Hamman in June 2022. It has since worked intensely to prepare recommendations for the Governor\, the Legislature\, and all New Mexicans. Their report\, regarding the upending of historic trends of water resources and uses\, will be released soon. \nKyle Harwood\, water attorney\, and Norm Gaume\, president of the Middle Rio Grande Water Advocates\, are Water Task Force members. They will summarize scientific projections of how water supplies will shrink due to climate change and the challenges this brings to water use and management in New Mexico. \nThis virtual production presented by 350NM on November 29 at 6:30 p.m. is the first of a three-part series\, focusing on summarizing our water resource problems under climate change and the task force water management and planning recommendations. \nThe Middle Rio Grande Water Advocates will present the second session on December 8 at 6:30 pm. Task Force members will summarize Task Force recommendations pertaining to helping communities plan\, fund\, design\, build\, operate\, and maintain drinking water\, wastewater\, and stormwater infrastructure\, and to recommendations to improve watershed\, river\, and aquifer health. \nThe third session will be presented by the Water Advocates on January 11\, at 6:30 pm. This presentation will focus on the task force and other water bills and appropriation requests that require the 2023 Legislature’s and the Governor’s approval. \nEven if precipitation remains the same in New Mexico\, rising temperatures from historical and continuing greenhouse gas emissions mean much less water available for wildlife\, agriculture\, and us all. Our state is one of the driest in the nation\, with a highly variable surface water supply and high dependence on irreplaceable fossil groundwater. Water required for New Mexico’s resilient future is further challenged by growing aridity\, unsustainable and growing water demand\, increasing temperatures\, competing interests\, and interstate litigation. Climate change is upending the historical trends on which water use practices and interstate water compact agreements are based. \nRegister\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Climate-wise landscaping - Sequester at home
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will take an active and optimistic approach to dealing with our changing climate by summarizing some of the actions that property owners or managers (homeowners\, communities\, and municipalities) can take now to become more Earth-friendly. In general\, each action suggested accomplishes at least one of three objectives: \n\nTo help the landscape survive climate change\,\nTo help wildlife survive climate change\, and\nTo help to actually mitigate climate change through various ways including carbon sequestration\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Regenerative Agriculture - Sequestering carbon in agricultural soil
DESCRIPTION:New regenerative farming practices have demonstrated that it is possible to rebuild healthy topsoil\, reduce the use of expensive fertilizers\, and produce far more nutrient dense crops. These developments offer significant benefits in the form of healthier foods while also capturing and storing huge quantities of carbon in agricultural soil. \nPlease join us for a discussion on this important topic with two leaders in this field as answer these and other questions: \n\nWhat has led to the depletion of carbon stored in agricultural soils?\nWhat is the potential of agricultural land to sequester carbon and how do we measure this?\nWhat do we mean by regenerative agriculture and what are the known practices it includes?\nWhy are these practices beneficial and what is happening at the soil level that makes them effective?\nWhat do we see happening in farms and livestock operations that demonstrate the benefits of these practices?\nHow can regenerative agriculture be scaled and how do carbon markets play into this transformation?\nHow can consumers help support regenerative farming practices through their food purchases?\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Addressing Climate Damages: A Call to Action from the IPCC Report
DESCRIPTION:World Resources Institute\nThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report to released on February 28 will reconfirm that even if countries make critical emission cuts\, the economic and social costs of climate impacts are already severe and destined to get worse. While adaptation remains essential and must remain a high priority on the global climate action agenda\, some impacts go beyond any means to adapt\, with developing countries most at risk. That is why this seminal report must be a call to action for governments to reach a decision at COP27 to unlock funding that not only helps countries curb emissions and adapt to climate impacts\, but also addresses the economic and cultural losses and damages that cannot be avoided. \nJoin us on March 8 for an overview of the IPCC report’s findings and a frank discussion about how significant losses and damages from climate change are not only a future risk\, but already a present-day reality for vulnerable people in hotspots around the world. You will hear from leading scientists\, policymakers\, and advocates on how the world must respond to the growing threats from climate change and how critical it is for governments to reach consensus at the COP27 UN climate summit to go beyond talking about funding for loss and damage and instead establish the means to deliver it. \nSpeakers: \n\nNicola Sturgeon\, First Minister of Scotland\nDebra Roberts\, Co-Chair of the Working Group II report\, IPCC\nSaleemul Huq\, Director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development in Bangladesh\nTina Stege\, Climate Envoy for the Marshall Islands\nWanjira Mathai\, Vice President and Regional Director for Africa\, World Resources Institute (moderator)\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Energy Democracy Convergence
DESCRIPTION:YUCCA is hosting this Energy Democracy Convergence on the eve of the 2022 NM State Legislative Session where NM state representatives\, senators\, and the Governor will convene to debate legislation in a 30 day session. This session only financially related legislation and the Governor’s agenda is able to be considered. \nIn the last few years\, more climate legislation has been considered but it continues to be considered from a top down corporate approach. We cannot continue to consider legislation with the pockets of industry and corporations as the top priority are not going to get us out of this crisis. We are must organize for community-based and power shifting solutions instead. \nThus we are putting forward the calls of New Mexicans and frontline communities to host Energy Democracy and Environmental Justice movement leaders – in order to deliberate about the principles\, frameworks\, opportunities\, and threats in our movements. We are concerned that we only have 10 years to act and that in order to do so – we need to make sure to work together to build power and work against forces that aim to co-opt and divide us or marginalize us – and get clear about what we are working FOR. \nSign up here: https://bit.ly/YuccaEnergy \nWho is invited?\nYouth climate activists\, environmental justice organizations\, environmental groups\, social and economic justice orgs and activists\, and anyone interested in advancing energy democracy in New Mexico!

SUMMARY:Lobby Training: Produced Water Act Amendments
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to hear about related amendments to the Produced Water Act\, Oil and Gas Act\, and the Water Quality Act to protect fresh water and the public from toxic waste. \n‘Produced Water’ is the oil and gas industry’s name for their toxic wastewater. The oil and gas industry consumes MILLIONS of gallons of New Mexico’s precious freshwater every year. During and after the fracking process\, millions of gallons of so-called Produced Water is generated by the industry. Currently\, this toxic waste is poisoning our land\, water\, and air with little regulation or oversight. Negligent spills occur daily. Thousands of massive ponds and corroded steel tanks store the highly toxic waste. Corrosion\, human error\, overflow\, and equipment failure are the most common reasons for spills. \nChanges in the law are necessary to ensure the safe handling and disposal of this toxic wastewater and to protect the public and preserve scarce freshwater. The amendments in the bill will: \n1) prohibit freshwater use in fracking and \n2) protect public health\, the environment\, and freshwater from oil and gas pollution. \nPANELISTS: \n1.) Sen. Antoinette Sedillo Lopez\, \n2.) Rev. Dave Rogers with Citizens Caring for the Future\, Carlsbad Resident\, \n3.) Dale Doremus\, Sierra Club – Rio Grande Chapter Water Chair\, and \n4.)
