Invited Talk:  How do we talk to others about the climate crisis

Paul Biderman (350 Santa Fe) will present climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe’s talk at the TEDWomen 2018 on “The most important thing you can do about climate change is to talk about it.” Paul will share his comments on her TedTalk and her latest book “Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World”.

Paul will then lead a discussion with participants to see how we can put the principles in to practice.

Bio

Paul Biderman and his wife Ellen moved to New Mexico from New York City in 1970 so Paul could take his first job working in legal services for the Navajo people. After three years, they moved to Albuquerque and then Santa Fe, where they have lived since 1975. Paul worked for the Attorney General’s Consumer Division, starting the unit to intervene on behalf of consumers of utility services in rate cases, before becoming director of the Division. He later served four years as New Mexico’s Secretary of Energy and Minerals, where he advocated for conservation and renewable energy initiatives. He spent the last two decades of his career at UNM Law School, initiating the Judicial Education Center and leading the Institute of Public Law.

Since retiring from UNM in 2011, Paul has volunteered for the Citizens’ Climate Lobby Chapter in Santa Fe, focusing for the last several years on the 350 Santa Fe chapter, for which he is co-facilitator. He continues to teach and consult on public ethics, while serving on ethics committees for the state judiciary and the City of Santa Fe.
