Details: This experience is meant to introduce people of faith and conscience to frontline communities in Southeast New Mexico and learn about the oil and gas industry and its effects on people and environment. Experiencing the realities, talking with frontline community members, reflecting and praying are pieces of the experience that culminates in each person making a commitment for solidarity work with the communities through Interfaith Power and Light. The experience is led by Sr. Joan Brown, executive director IPL and Kayley Shoup, organizer for Citizens Caring for the Future, Carlsbad.

Logistics: People carpool from their location to Carlsbad Caverns to begin the experience. In the Permian meals, housing, and transportation are taken care of. Expenses will be covered, but IPL asks for a $75 donation to help defray costs, but no one is turned away. Accommodations and food will be simple. We will need to know if you have food restrictions that are medical related. Persons are responsible for their own physical well-being.

Schedule:

Thursday May 9:  Arrive at 1 pm at Carlsbad Caverns for an opening reflection, visiting the Caverns and experience beauty and wonder and then reflect upon what we are doing to earth and community of life
Dinner with frontline community members in Carlsbad and members of Citizens Caring for the Future

Friday, May 10:
Breakfast and opening of the day, prayerful ritual and sharing
Touring the Permian basin, meeting more community members in Jal, Eunice and/or Hobbs. The group will also stop along the way for a prayer of healing and wisdom at an oil and gas site
Return to Carlsbad for dinner and processing

Saturday May 11:
Opening reflection and breakfast
Learn about filing permit complaints and then do this as an action
Sharing on this experience and commitment forward
